  • Macular Degeneration | perlmancenter

Macular Degeneration What is Macular Degeneration and How Common is it? Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition in which the central portion of your retina tissue, the macula, deteriorates, causing central vision to be blurry and distorted. There are two major types of macular degeneration called “dry macular degeneration” and “wet macular degeneration.” Both forms can cause vision loss, but the wet type is more rapid and aggressive. Back In dry macular degeneration, tiny mounds of yellowish material accumulate in the retina and can damage the sensitive nerve cells. These mounds are called drusen. In many cases, the drusen only cause minor damage and result in mild vision loss. Nutritional supplements and antioxidant vitamins and minerals may reduce the chance of more damage (AREDS II or Age Related Eye Disease Study part II). These vitamins can be bought in drug stores and supermarkets and are sold as Ocuvite or I-CAPS among other brands. In wet macular degeneration, abnormal blood vessels grow and leak under the retina. These blood vessels usually cause more severe damage to the nerve cells and can sometimes bleed. Over the past few years major advances have occurred for the treatment of wet macular degeneration. New drugs such as Avastin , Lucentis , Eylea and Macugen can stop the growth of these vessels. Early detection is key to the treatment of wet macular degeneration. If you experience any central loss of vision or distortion come see us right away.

  • Comprehensive Eye Exam | perlmancenter

Comprehensive Eye Exam A comprehensive eye exam will evaluate not only how well you see, but also identify potential eye diseases. Some eye diseases, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, can result in serious vision loss if not detected and treated early. Often patients with these diseases don't experience any visual symptoms before vision loss occurs. If you are over 35, you should have a comprehensive eye exam every two years. Patients over 65 or with a family history of glaucoma, diabetes or diabetic retinopathy should have a yearly eye exam. Back What to expect at your eye exam: Your doctor will most likely dilate the pupils of your eyes, in order to better see the retina at the back of your eye. You may want to consider making transportation arrangements, as your vision may be blurry for a few hours after dilating. Your exam may include: Visual acuity or refraction test to determine the degree to which you may be nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism. Muscle function test to check the movement of your eyes in each direction and at specified angles. This test will identify any muscle weakness or involuntary eye movement. Binocular vision skills assessment to ensure that your eyes work together properly as a team. This is important for proper depth perception, eye muscle coordination and the ability to change focus from near to far objects. Visual field test to measure your peripheral vision, the width of the area you can see when you're looking straight ahead. This test may also detect diseases of the eyes or neurological disorders. Eye pressure test. Your doctor may administer one or more tests to evaluate your intra-ocular pressure. High intra-ocular pressure may be a sign of glaucoma. Color vision screening to see if you perceive colors properly. Eye health assessment is performed with a slit-lamp microscope and an ophthalmoscope. These examination tools allow the doctor to evaluate your pupil responses, optic nerve, retina, cornea and lens. We also have a variety of sophisticated photographic equipment which is often used during examination.

  • Toric Lenses for Astigmatism | perlmancenter

Toric Lenses for Astigmatism The Toric Lenses for Cataract Surgery Toric lens implants have been approved by the FDA since 2005 because they are safe, reliable and effective when used on appropriate candidates during cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is performed on patients who have cloudiness in their natural lens. The Toric lens can be implanted into the eye that has a cataract AND pre-existing astigmatism during surgery to allow for the best possible vision without eyeglasses. Astigmatism is a condition which occurs when the cornea is not shaped like a basketball but more like a football. This condition causes people to have blurry vision. In the past, ophthalmologists might make incisions at the edges of the cornea to help create a rounder shape. However, the Toric lens is now being used very effectively for patients who suffer from astigmatism and cataracts. Back Toric IOL Advantages Highly reliable treatment method Better post-op outcomes Reduced residual refractive cylinder More freedom from glasses for distance Better bilateral uncorrected visual acuity More effective and predictable compared to relaxing incisions During the placement of the Toric lens, the surgeon makes a small incision in the eye/ cornea. The haptics, or arms of the lens, will then help the new lens to unfold and correctly maintain its position in a particular direction or axis. The Toric lens is used to correct astigmatism in patients only at the time of cataract surgery. • To Learn More About the Toric Intraocular Lens Click Here. • For Financing Options Ask Us About Care Credit or Click Here.

  • Entropion and Ectropion Repair | perlmancenter

Entropion and Ectropion Entropion (IN-turning) is the rolling inward of the lower eyelid and eyelashes toward the eye. In this situation, the eyelid skin and eyelashes rub against the cornea (front part of the eye) and conjunctiva (mucous membrane that protects the eye). This rubbing causes tearing, crusting, mucous discharge, irritation, and ultimately affects the vision. Most cases of entropion are a result of aging, which may lead to the tissues of the eye relaxing. Other cases develop from scarring of the inner surface of the eyelid caused by burns, inflammatory diseases, or allergic reactions. In rare instances, entropion can appear at birth if the eyelids are not formed correctly. Entropion should be repaired surgically before the rubbing causes infection or scarring of the cornea. The surgery to repair entropion is typically performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. There is typically no patch needed. You will apply an antibiotic ointment for about a week following surgery. The result from surgery should leave your eye feeling comfortable and the risk of corneal damage and vision loss, can be avoided. Back PRE OPERATIVE ENTROPION POST OPERATIVE ENTROPION Ectropion (OUT-turning) is the sagging and outward turning of the lower eyelid and eyelashes. During a normal blink, your eyelids sweep across the exterior of the cornea. This removes debri and also is critical in spreading the normal tears over the eye and cornea, keeping it lubricated. When the lower lid is turned outward with "ectropion", the cornea gathers irritants, and is not correctly cleaned and wiped with each blink. Eventually, the tears that are produced overflow the lid and run down the cheek, causing patients to complain of tearing and irritation. Dr. Perlman explains that the eye is producing the correct amount of tears, but the normal drainage pattern is disturbed, so that the tears are not pumped into the normal drainage canals and into the nose as usual. Thus, the "tearing" occurs in addition to mucous buildup and possible infection. The most common cause of ectropion (similar to entropion) is simply that the tissues around the lids become loose and lax with aging, and this allows the lid to turn in or out. During ectropion surgery, local anesthesia is typically used, and the procedure takes approximately 15–30 minutes. Typically there is no patching and apply an antibiotic ointment is applied for about a week following surgery.

  • Cataract Surgery | perlmancenter

Cataract Surgery What Are Cataracts? A cataract is the gradual clouding of the natural lens inside the eye that can impair vision. More than half of all Americans age 65 and older have cataracts in their eyes. Cataracts occur when there is a buildup of protein in the lens that makes it cloudy. This prevents light from passing through a normally clear lens, causing some or in severe cases, complete loss of vision. Back The Chance You will Develop Cataracts 50% of Americans ages 65+ have some clouding in their eyes. 70% of Americans ages 75+ have cataracts that impair their vision. Possible symptoms of a maturing cataract Blurred vision Difficulty seeing at night Colors appear faded or yellowish Double vision Frequent changes in prescription Halos or glare from sunlight, headlights or lamps Need for brighter reading light Treatment for Cataracts A series of tests will be performed. An eye exam will be given to test how well you can see. Bring your glasses to your visit and a current list of any medications that you are taking. Our eye doctor will dilate your pupils in order to examine the condition of the lens and other parts of the eye. If you suffer from vision loss that impairs your activities of daily life, you may be a candidate for cataract surgery, which involves removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a clear implant made of an acrylic or silicone material. Despite claims by the manufacturer of Similasin eyedrops, there is no effective non-surgical treatments for cataracts.Even if your natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens, you probably will need a new eyeglass prescription. Ask us about specialized lens implant options; in most cases these premium lenses will eliminate the need for glasses (for distance or near) following the surgery. Cataract surgery is usually done as an outpatient basis in an operating room under local / topical anesthesia (eyedrops). We will usually schedule one eye at a time; the eye with the worst vision will typically go first. Vision is usually improved within a few days after cataract surgery. Most of our cataract surgery is done with a "dropless technique" where medication is used at the time of cataract surgery which obviates the need to use costly eyedrops that are often difficult for our patients to administer. New glasses are prescribed, if needed, several weeks after cataract surgery.
