- Contact Lenses | perlmancenter
Contact Lenses You Contact lenses are divided into two main categories: soft and rigid gas permeable. Daily Wear Soft Contact Lenses Soft contact lenses are made of a soft polymer-plastic material combined with a percentage of water. Water allows oxygen to pass through the contact lens material and increases comfort. Many soft contact lenses also provide UV protection. Soft contact lenses are more comfortable than rigid gas permeable contact lenses when first inserted into the eye. Many soft contact lenses are disposable and can be thrown away after a short period of use. Being able to have a fresh pair of soft contact lenses means less chance of infection, less cleaning, and more comfort, especially for people whose eyes naturally produce more protein that clouds contact lenses. Other soft contact lenses are worn on a yearly basis and are not disposable. Rigid Gas Permeable Hard Contact Lenses Rigid gas permeable lenses are more rigid than soft contact lenses and therefore more durable. Unlike older versions of hard contact lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses are made with silicone polymers, allowing oxygen to circulate to the cornea of the eye. Compared to soft contact lenses, rigid gas permeable contacts maintain their shape and offer clearer vision for some types of corrections. They are also easy to take care of and are extremely durable. The amount of time needed to adjust to rigid gas permeable contact lenses is longer than with soft contact lenses. To achieve maximum comfort, a rigid gas permeable contact lens should be worn every day. Both rigid gas permeable and soft contacts are available as extended wear options. These contacts may be worn overnight. Sleeping in extended wear contacts may decrease the flow of oxygen to the cornea, so it is important to wear them as directed and get routine check ups with your eye doctor. Toric Contact Lenses Toric contact lenses are special lenses for people with astigmatism. These lenses are made from the same material as other contact lenses and come in soft or rigid gas permeable forms. Like bifocal lenses, toric lenses have two powers, one for the astigmatism and another for nearsightedness or farsightedness. There is also a mechanism to keep the contact lens relatively stable on the eye when you blink or look around. Lens Care and Hygiene Before handling contact lenses, wash and rinse your hands. Use a mild non-cosmetic soap. Soaps containing perfumes, oils or lotions leave a film on the hands, which may be transferred to the lenses and cause eye irritation. Dry hands with a lint-free towel. Fingernails should be short and smooth to avoid damaging the lenses or scratching the eye. Apply cosmetics after inserting and handling contact lenses. Hairspray may leave deposits on the contact lens. Use hairspray before inserting contact lenses. Do not use tap water to clean or soak contact lenses. Tap water contains bacteria that can cause serious eye infections that may lead to blindness. Use lens care products recommended by your eye doctor. Contact lens solutions are designed for single use only in the storing case. Do not use solutions more than one time. Protein-removing enzyme cleaners are useful for rigid gas permeable contact lenses and for daily wear non-disposable soft contact lenses. Replace the contact lens storage case every three months. Rinse the storage case every day with sterile rinsing solution. Let the storage case air dry. It is important to follow your doctor's recommendations regarding lens care and hygiene to prevent eye complications due to contact lens wear.

- Glaucoma | perlmancenter
Glaucoma Glaucoma is an eye condition that can develop causing damage to the optic vision (in early stages) or even blindness if not treated. It is after the result of too much fluid pressure building up inside of the eye. It tends to be inherited and may not show up until later in life. If damage to the optic nerve from high eye pressure continues, glaucoma will cause loss of vision. Without treatment, glaucoma can cause total permanent blindness within a few years. Because most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain from this increased pressure, it is important to see your ophthalmologist or optometrist regularly so that glaucoma can be diagnosed and treated before long-term visual loss occurs. If you are over the age of 45 and if you have a family history of glaucoma, you should have an eye exam every year. If you have health problems such as diabetes or a family history of glaucoma or are at risk for other eye diseases, you may need to visit your eye doctor more frequently. Back
- Dry Eye Treatment | perlmancenter
Dry Eye Treatment Dry Eye Treatment Some people do not produce enough tears or the appropriate quality of tears to keep the eye healthy and comfortable. This is known as "dry eye". While this occurs mostly in women after menopause, the symptoms are frequently experienced by men and women in younger years, as well. The symptoms of "dry eye" can be mild, as in a bit of burning, but only after extended reading, computer, or driving tasks. Note that these activities all involve sustained visual concentration, that often results in decreased blinking. This is what prevents the normal tears from being coated over the cornea (the clear front "dome" of the front of the eye), and leads to the discomfort. If nothing is done, the vision quality can be diminished, due to the corneal surface no longer being smooth and well lubricated. In severe cases, patients may use lubrication drops up to every 12-20 minutes to avoid uncomfortable or even painful symptoms. Everyone is different, and there is a full spectrum of the degree to which "dry eye" can affect our eyes. Back Lubrication, Drops and Ointments Eye drops, or artificial tears, lubricate your eyes and help provide moisture. Since eye drops are available without prescription, and many brands are on the market, we recommend trying several types to ensure you find the best one for you. Often, we'll provide you with different samples, of different thicknesses, for you to try out. If you are sensitive to the preservatives in artificial tears, preservative-free eye drops are available. They may be a better option for you if you need to use artificial tears more often than every two hours. You can use the preservation-free eye drops as often as needed. Restasis® and Xiidra® Prescription Eye Drops Restasis® and Xiidra® are medications in the form of eyedrops that help increase your eyes’ natural capability to produce tears, if that ability is being reduced by inflammation due to chronic dry eye, or other immune-related disease. In some cases, people find that they begin to produce more tears, and are able to reduce the frequency of their regular tear application. Restasis and Xiidra are used twice a day, and patients may experience some improvement after a month or two, though often it may take up to 4 months of continued use to really see a difference. Clearly, starting these medications requires a long-term commitment, but can be an extraordinary benefit for some patients. Punctal Plugs Conserving your own tears is another way to keep your eyes moist. Normally, your tears drain out away from the eye through a small channel into the nose. This is why your nose runs when you cry. It's possible to place a plug in those openings in a brief procedure in the office. Usually, 1 of the 2 normal openings are closed to see if this helps. The channels can be closed either temporarily or permanently to conserve your own tears and to make your artificial tears last longer.
- Cataract Surgery | perlmancenter
Cataract Surgery What Are Cataracts? A cataract is the gradual clouding of the natural lens inside the eye that can impair vision. More than half of all Americans age 65 and older have cataracts in their eyes. Cataracts occur when there is a buildup of protein in the lens that makes it cloudy. This prevents light from passing through a normally clear lens, causing some or in severe cases, complete loss of vision. Back The Chance You will Develop Cataracts 50% of Americans ages 65+ have some clouding in their eyes. 70% of Americans ages 75+ have cataracts that impair their vision. Possible symptoms of a maturing cataract Blurred vision Difficulty seeing at night Colors appear faded or yellowish Double vision Frequent changes in prescription Halos or glare from sunlight, headlights or lamps Need for brighter reading light Treatment for Cataracts A series of tests will be performed. An eye exam will be given to test how well you can see. Bring your glasses to your visit and a current list of any medications that you are taking. Our eye doctor will dilate your pupils in order to examine the condition of the lens and other parts of the eye. If you suffer from vision loss that impairs your activities of daily life, you may be a candidate for cataract surgery, which involves removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a clear implant made of an acrylic or silicone material. Despite claims by the manufacturer of Similasin eyedrops, there is no effective non-surgical treatments for cataracts.Even if your natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens, you probably will need a new eyeglass prescription. Ask us about specialized lens implant options; in most cases these premium lenses will eliminate the need for glasses (for distance or near) following the surgery. Cataract surgery is usually done as an outpatient basis in an operating room under local / topical anesthesia (eyedrops). We will usually schedule one eye at a time; the eye with the worst vision will typically go first. Vision is usually improved within a few days after cataract surgery. Most of our cataract surgery is done with a "dropless technique" where medication is used at the time of cataract surgery which obviates the need to use costly eyedrops that are often difficult for our patients to administer. New glasses are prescribed, if needed, several weeks after cataract surgery.
